[Chateau d’Yquem Sauternes 2005]
Robert Parker rating: 97/100
Chateau D'Yquem's wines are renowned for their complex, concentrated, and quite sweet palate. The wine's crisp acidity balances its sweetness, offering great aging potential; certain vintages of D'Yquem can even be aged for a century or longer. As time passes, the aroma and flavor of Chateau D'Yquem become more complex and enchanting, and the color of the wine gradually transitions from bright straw yellow to golden brown, amber, and caramel.
The 2005 d'Yquem, pale to medium lemon-gold, opens with a provocative, mineral and earth-colored bouquet of chalk dust, wet pebbles, and dried wild mushrooms, with a core of warm apricot, green mango, honey toast, ginger, and pink grapefruit, plus hints of beeswax, orange blossom, and saffron. The palate confirms that this wine is still a bit closed and shut down, offering a heartbreaking glimpse of its gorgeous, tightly woven, and intricate structure, with lively acidity and a wonderful creamy texture, and an incredibly long and fragrant finish.
