[Chateau d‘Yquem Sauternes 1997]
Robert Parker rating: 95/100
Chateau D'Yquem is renowned for its complex, concentrated, and quite sweet taste. The crisp acidity in the wine balances the sweetness, making it highly age-worthy; individual vintages of D'Yquem can even be aged for a century or longer. As time passes, the aroma and flavor of Chateau D'Yquem become more complex and enchanting, and the color of the wine gradually transitions from bright straw yellow to golden brown, amber, and caramel.
"The climate in 1997 was unusual, being a relatively warm and dry year, which is comparable to this year's very slow onset of botrytis." Warm temperatures brought ample sweetness, and the late-season rains ultimately stimulated the spread of noble rot, making it a potentially very good Sauternes vintage. However, strict selection was crucial, ultimately allowing d'Yquem to produce impressive wines far above the standard of that vintage.
