Chateau Bacchus is located in the premium wine region of Ningxia Helan Mountain East, China. It is one of the early boutique wineries in China engaged in estate wine production and boasts an excellent terroir. In the 2019 ranking of classified wineries in the Ningxia Helan Mountain East wine region, it was rated as a second-class winery.
The creation of the winery began with a romantic encounter. The owner, Ms. Wang Yanhui, and her husband, Mr. Wang Sanwei, fell in love at first sight in France. They made a promise in front of the statue of Bacchus, the ancient Roman god of wine: they would definitely produce "wine made by Chinese people."In 1999, the owner personally planted the first vine, began constructing their own vineyard, and established the winery. In 2008, the winery produced its first estate wine, marking the beginning of the Helan Mountain East Foothills wine industry.
The vineyard of the winery covers an area of 1,000 acres and currently mainly cultivates Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Gernischt, Merlot, Syrah, and Vidal. The region has a continental arid and semi-arid climate, with ample sunlight, little rainfall, and a large temperature difference between day and night, which is conducive to the accumulation of flavor compounds in the grapes. The soil in the vineyard is gravelly, with excellent aeration and drainage, making it very suitable for grape growth.
In grape cultivation, the winery manages the vineyard with vertical distribution, prunes twice each season, and uses drip irrigation for watering. In addition, the winery does not use any pesticides to reduce the impact on the natural environment. In the winemaking process, the grapes are hand-picked and destemmed, then the staff macerate the grape berries before placing them into a pneumatic press for pressing. The juice after pressing will be placed in stainless steel tanks to ferment for seven days, during which tartaric acid will be added, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine after fermentation will be aged in French Radoux oak barrels for twelve months, followed by protein fining and bottling. The wine produced in this manner has a balanced structure and a rich mouthfeel.
In addition, the winery places great emphasis on the power of technology and talent, having built a winemaking workshop that blends traditional and modern methods, as well as a temperature- and humidity-controlled underground cellar. They collaborate with institutions such as the Ningxia University Wine College, the CAFA Wine Academy in the Bordeaux region of France, and the Ningxia Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences to provide strong technological and talent support for grape cultivation and winemaking. The winery places great emphasis on brand culture construction, not only organizing wine-making experience activities and professional wine and food pairing tasting events but also hosting unique festive activities such as music festivals, hop festivals, grape-picking festivals, and ice wine festivals. The winery also collaborated with contemporary renowned painter Ms. Qian Lingge to design a private high-end custom wine series called "The Sound of Flowers," and jointly launched a high-end corporate custom wine series called "Secret" with the China BVT Wine Trading Center. This series is authorized by the French CAFA Sommelier Training Institution.
Since its establishment, the winery's many high-quality wines have repeatedly won awards at international competitions. The year 2017 was particularly significant for the winery, as its wines won numerous awards at various competitions that year.In the 2017 Asia Wine & Spirits Awards (AWSA) held in Hong Kong, the 2015 Chateau Bacchus Superfine Merlot won the Gold Medal, the 2013 Chateau Bacchus Superfine Cabernet Sauvignon won the Double Gold Medal, and the 2014 and 2015 Chateau Bacchus Superfine Cabernet Sauvignon won the Gold Medal. That same year, the 2014 and 2015 vintages of Chateau Bacchus Cabernet Sauvignon also performed excellently at the International Wine Spirits Competition (ISC).
