[Le Marquis de Calon Segur 2014]
James Suckling rating: 92/100
Chateau Calon Segur is located in Saint-Estephe, Medoc, Bordeaux, France, and is classified as a third growth in the 1855 classification, adjacent to Chateau Montrose.
This second wine is managed and vinified in the same way as the grand vin, with the second wine being made from younger vines and aged in 30% new French oak barrels for about 17 months.
"Le Marquis de Calon-Ségur 2014 is a blend of 67% Merlot (now including the young vines planted in front of the castle by Vincent Millet and the late Mrs. Gasqueton) and 33% Cabernet Sauvignon." Aged in 50% new oak barrels, it exudes a rich, almost decadent bouquet of blackcurrant and blueberry jam, with a hint of warmth from the alcohol. In the context of the vintage, this is very exciting. The palate is rich, full-bodied, and powerful, with layers of super-ripe Merlot fruit flavors: the mouthfeel is lush, almost intoxicating, with a very sweet finish that needs more precision and focus."
Grape varieties:
64% Merlot and 36% Cabernet Sauvignon
