Chateau Leoville Poyferre is located in the Saint Julien region and was classified as a second growth in the 1855 Bordeaux wine classification.Chateau Leoville Poyferre was originally one of the three Leoville estates, and in 1769, it split into Chateau Leoville Barton and Chateau Leoville Las Cases, apart from Chateau Leoville Poyferre.The three Leoville estates were all classified as Second Growths in 1855.The soil is composed of gravel from the Gironde River and layers of sedimentary sand.
