[Chateau Clement-Pichon 2020]
James Suckling rating: 92/100
The estate is located at the gateway to Bordeaux in the southern Médoc, with a history dating back to the 14th century. At that time, it was a medieval estate that later belonged to the Sun King, Louis XIV, who used it as a hunting lodge on two occasions.
The present-day castle is one of the most impressive in the Médoc region, built by the Barons Pichon in 1880, in a pure Renaissance style, similar to that of Chambord and Chenonceaux. Clément Fayat acquired the castle in 1976 and renamed it Clément Pichon in 1985.This 70-hectare (175-acre) estate includes a protected pond, a bird sanctuary, 25 hectares (62 acres) of beautiful grounds, and a vineyard. Several contemporary artworks are scattered throughout the grounds.
The aromas of black olives, black currants, black plums, and cocoa powder waft through the air. A full-bodied Haut-Médoc wine, with firm yet smooth tannins that meld with the fleshy fruit. Also very long.
Grape varieties:
70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc Cabernet Franc
